TRADITIONAL / FOLK / SUFI - (RAJASTHAN, INDIA)
"Zordaar" (Hindi/Urdu, means powerful), is the power trio of Latif, Latif and Juriyab (the "L.L. Kool J's of Rajasthan"?) that carry forward the centuries old tradition of Manganiyar music from Rajasthan, India and beyond its borders.
Channeling the voice of the late Mangey "Manga' Khan (Barmer Boys), Latif Khan's vocals and harmonium are a resounding echo that showcase the rich oral traditions of the region. The percussive beats of dholak delivered by the other Latif in the group, coupled with the rhythmic clacks of the khartaal in the hands of youngster Juriyab Khan (who also plays the bhapang, morchang, and learning beatboxing!), round out the trio. This synthesis of the old and the new, create a timeless soundscape that celebrates the diverse sounds of Rajasthan, Kutch, and Sindh.
Produced and managed by Ankur Malhotra (who has worked with legendary Rajasthani musicians such as Padma Shri Lakha Khan, and created/produced one of the pioneering bands of the genre - Barmer Boys), ZorDaar is a project that brings fresh light to folk songs from the region. Highlighting songs both popular and forgotten, transcending traditional musical boundaries, and leading the roots revival of Rajasthani folk music. From Krishna bhajans to Sufi kalaams, traditional folklore, myths, and songs of celebration sung in Sindhi, Marwadi and Hindi, the music of Zordaar embraces the unique richness of the rhythms and melodies of Rajasthan.
