Traditional glosses and cants redoblats from Ibiza and Formentera
With the show Turmarí, the duo L’arannà dives deep into the folk music traditions
of the Pityusic Islands, offering—through their distinctive blend of sound
exploration—a unique perspective on Ibiza and Formentera. Synthesizers and
keyboards share the stage with traditional instruments like castanets, drums, the
espasí, the flaüta, and aesthetics inspired by the ancestral ball pagès dance.
Between traditional glosses and cants redoblats, some unearthed from sound
archives and others of their own creation, this Ibiza-Catalan group weaves a
narrative that traces the roots and lived reality of two islands that are far more than
just a dreamt-of paradise..
Turmarí is a musical performance rooted in the traditional music of Ibiza and Formentera.
It brings new value to cant redoblat—an indigenous vocal style of the Pityusic Islands and
a key expression of their cultural heritage—alongside folk melodies from the popular
songbook and the instruments woven into the islands’ folklore.
This reimagining takes shape through the creation and composition of an original,
innovative repertoire that allows these roots to emerge in a contemporary context, seen
through the lens of a young, female, and rising group committed to exploring electronic
soundscapes.
Cant redoblat is a defining
element of the traditional
music of Ibiza and
Formentera. Its distinctive,
intense vibrato reflects a
broader Mediterranean
custom of richly ornamented
monodic singing.
This artistic proposal affirms
and celebrates the cultural
legacy of the islands. The
performance includes both
reinterpreted traditional
melodies filtered through
modern aesthetics, and original, previously unheard songs. On stage, both the music and
the visual elements are imbued with the symbols of the islands—from traditional and
natural heritage to contemporary realities, including the ever-present culture of the night..
Anna Sala (Sant Feliu de Guíxols) and Lara Magrinyà (Ibiza) formed L’arannà after
pursuing formal studies in classical music. In 2024, they released La salamandra, an album
inspired by their research into the stories of Mercè Rodoreda, one of the main Catalan
writers of 20th century..
This project took them on tour across Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. They have
performed at more than 50 venues. Even, in Madrid or Granada. In 2024, they also
represented Barcelona at the Guadalajara International Book Fair (Mexico) during the
official handover ceremony between guest cities..
Their debut album was produced by Emili Bosch and features a collaboration with
renowned pianist Marco Mezquida. During the 2023/24 season, they were selected for
the Marfà artist support programme (Girona), and for the Obrador d’Arrel residency at
the Fira Mediterrània in 2024/25. Both artists have also taken part in notable productions
such as Evoé! alongside Raül Refree, Jordi Oriol and Maria Mazzotta; El cant de la Sibil·la
with Maria Arnal; and have contributed to the original soundtrack of La Mesías by Javier
Calvo and Javier Ambrossi.

Press Quotes
“Magrinyà's voice has a great capacity to move, as occurred in a song dedicated to the Podarcios
pityusensis, the lizard endemic to the Pitiusas, now threatened by the introduction of snakes: he
sang it in the blues, expressing the emotion like Adele does in her ballads. The ovation in the
small Kursaal hall was unanimous. Let's remember its name: L’arannà.” - Diari Ara
“It is worth highlighting the version they recorded of “I una cançó em demanau”, sung by
Francisca Escandell and collected by Alan Lomax in 1952. Listening to both versions is highly
recommended, as it reveals the brilliance with which L’arannà have reinterpreted the song while
preserving intact what makes Escandell’s recording so unique.” - Núvvol
“L’arannà sing a first half rooted in Rodoreda’s short stories and a second half drawn from the
traditional music of Ibiza and Formentera. I couldn’t say which of the two captivates me more. The
duo deliver a memorable diptych concert: we will surely be hearing a lot about, thanks to their
free-flowing blend of folkloric electronics.” - El Pais
“The result, in any case, is an unexpected and perfectly rounded tribute to the writer, made up of
eight songs that ultimately leave you wanting more. The best possible sign.” - El Temps
